How can I celebrate the holidays safely during COVID-19?

COVID-19 cases are on the rise and we all need to do our part to keep our communities and each other safe.

Keep your distance

The holidays are usually the time to get together and celebrate, but this year those celebrations must look a little different.

Ontario will go into a province-wide lockdown on December 26, but tight restrictions are already in place in many major cities, like Toronto.

Even if you don’t live in a city that’s in lockdown, take extra precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19.

  • Get tested and self-isolate immediately if you have any symptoms, even if they’re mild
  • Stay at home as much as you can, and don’t meet with people you don’t live with
  • Wear a mask everywhere, indoors and outdoors

Even with these restrictions, there are ways you can get into the spirit at home!

  • Decorate your home (you can buy festive decorations online!)
  • Eat and drink holiday favourites like eggnog, hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies, and more
  • Watch holiday movies and TV shows

Connect virtually

Just because you can’t have large in-person gatherings doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate in other ways. Now more than ever, we need to connect with one another and check-in to make sure loved ones are doing okay.

This is an opportunity to create stronger bonds with people in your “bubble” and also learn how to care for those outside of your bubble while physically distanced.

Here are some ideas:

  • Mail your gifts and cards to family and friends
  • Make an effort to cook, exchange gifts, and party with the people you live with
  • Host online celebrations
  • Share pictures and videos of your festivities and activities on social media
  • Call or text someone you’re thinking of and wondering about

Be well

These holidays will be difficult for many people, especially if you are separated from family and loved ones because of the pandemic. There is no shame in feeling lonely or being angry at the situation.

Remember, you’re not in this alone and your feelings are completely acceptable. Make your mental health a priority, if you can. Seek out help, do self-care, and practice mindfulness.

We will all get through this together.
